Two separate programs
VA disability compensation is paid for conditions connected to service. SSDI is an insurance program funded by the Social Security taxes you paid while working. Each agency applies its own rules and makes its own decision.
Receiving both
There is no offset between VA compensation and SSDI. A Veteran can receive both in full, and many do.
A VA rating does not decide SSDI
Social Security considers VA evidence, but it is not bound by a VA rating. SSDI asks whether you can sustain substantial work, which is a different question from how severe a service-connected condition is.
Filing together
Because the evidence overlaps, preparing both claims at once saves time and keeps the records consistent. Some Veterans rated 100 percent Permanent and Total qualify for expedited SSDI processing.
