What SSI is

Supplemental Security Income is a needs-based program for people who are disabled, blind, or 65 and older and who have limited income and resources. Unlike SSDI, it does not depend on your work record.

How income is counted

Social Security subtracts countable income from the federal benefit rate. Some income is excluded, and only part of earned income counts. VA disability compensation is counted as unearned income.

The resource limit

Resources such as bank accounts are limited to a low amount for an individual or couple. Your home and usually one vehicle are not counted.

SSI with VA benefits

Because VA compensation counts as income, it can reduce or end an SSI payment. It is worth reviewing both together before you file.

Key takeaways
SSI is needs-based and does not require work credits.
VA compensation counts as income for SSI.
Your home and usually one vehicle are excluded from resources.
